Haptic Rain is a multisensory installation that lets users immerse themselves in the sensation of rain through a combination of synchronized visuals, sounds, and tactile experiences. Rain, in various forms, has been known to have a calming effect on people. Studies have shown that the low-frequency tones and rhythmic patterns of rain sounds can induce feelings of relaxation by encouraging the brain to produce alpha waves. This installation takes that concept a step further, turning it into a meditative art form.

「ハプティック・レイン」は、視覚、音、触覚の同期を組み合わせて、ユーザーが雨の感覚に没頭できる多感覚体験のインスタレーションです。様々な形態の雨は、人々に鎮静効果をもたらすことが知られています。研究によれば、雨の音の低周波音とリズミカルなパターンは、脳にアルファ波を生成するよう促すことで、リラクゼーションの感情を誘発することが示されています。このインスタレーションは、そのコンセプトをさらに進化させ、瞑想的なアート形式に昇華させています。

SENSORY REVERIE UNLEASHED（感覚の夢幻解放）

When experiencing Haptic Rain, users wear noise-canceling headphones to fully immerse themselves in the auditory component. Meanwhile, they place their hands under a haptic device that generates tactile sensations. Projected visuals on the haptic device complement the sound, creating an immersive rain experience.

The auditory journey begins with the familiar sound of raindrops, gradually evolving into a symphony inspired by water. As the experience progresses, the symphony transitions back into the calming sound of a single raindrop, completing the cycle. The haptic device provides vibrations that correspond to the sound, and the visual elements react in real-time to enhance the multisensory experience.

Haptic Rainを体験する際、ユーザーはノイズキャンセリングヘッドフォンを着用し、聴覚コンポーネントに完全に没頭します。一方、触覚デバイスの下に手を置いて触覚を生成します。触覚デバイスに投影された映像は音と補完し、没入感のある雨の体験を創り出します。

聴覚の旅は、馴染みのある雨粒の音から始まり、徐々に水にインスパイアされた交響曲に発展します。体験が進むにつれて、交響曲は穏やかな一滴の雨の音に移行し、サイクルを完成させます。触覚デバイスは音に対応する振動を提供し、視覚要素は多感覚体験を高めるためにリアルタイムで反応します。

There are four main components in the installation: a haptic ball, projector, headphones, and a laptop. The laptop runs two programs: (1) a MAX/MSP program to synchronize the timing for audio, visual, and haptic elements, and (2) MadMapper to map the projection onto the haptic ball. Noise-canceling headphones are connected to the laptop to provide an immersive auditory experience. Finally, the haptic ball communicates with the laptop through wireless communication.

Inside the haptic ball, there are three layers of compartments:
(1) At the bottom, there's a vibrotransducer that produces tactile sensations.
(2) In the middle compartment, there are a micro-controller (M5 Stack Core 2) and an amplifier.
(3) At the top, there's a power source for the micro-controller.

展示物には4つの主要なコンポーネントがあります：ハプティックボール、プロジェクター、ヘッドフォン、そしてノートパソコンです。ノートパソコンには2つのプログラムが実行されています：(1) オーディオ、ビジュアル、およびハプティックのタイミングを同期させるためのMAX/MSPプログラム、および(2) プロジェクションマッピングを行うためのMadMapperプログラム。ノイズキャンセリングヘッドフォンは没入型の音響体験を提供するためにノートパソコンに接続されています。最後に、ハプティックボールはノートパソコンとワイヤレス通信を行います。
